Three Ways We Help You Modify Your Genes For Weight Loss

Have you ever wondered why losing weight and keeping it off is nearly impossible? Do you struggle with starving yourself or avoiding your favorite foods only to have the scale not budge a bit? Many of my patients come to the Grewal Center for Mind Body Medicine with this struggle.

And you may feel you have tried EVERYTHING. From the Atkins diet to an all vegan diet, from yoga to high intensity interval training, from weighing your food to counting calories...and nothing has stuck!

It can be pretty overwhelming to try to eat a certain way if the people you cook for or eat with are not eating the same as you. And on top of a busy schedule, it can be hard to carve in time for an exercise class or workout. I understand the frustrations you feel and am here to guide you to your solution.

Because you are unique, so are the ways you have to take care of yourself. Not everyone will succeed under one type of diet, exercise routine or health plan.

Our bodies are like a machine made up of several systems. Each system needs to be treated a certain way to perform well. If one system is impaired, it can throw the whole machine off. In the same way, weight issues can be triggered by some part of our body's system being impaired.

In functional medicine we recognize that each person is made up of several systems. By taking a holistic approach to your health, we are able to find out which systems are causing you to gain or are preventing you from losing weight. Once I determine which system is causing your weight problem, I can customize a lifestyle plan unique to you. You will finally be able to get rid of those love handles, feel confident that you are eating foods that support your goals, have more energy to keep up with your kids, work projects, etc!

There are five major factors that impair your systems, causing excess weight: Genes, Early Environmental Influences, Hormonal Imbalances, Toxins and Gut Issues. I will address each one of these in an upcoming post, but for now we will start your weight-loss journey with your genes and three ways we can modify them.

GENETICS & EPIGENETICS

When you were born, your body was formed with a set of functional traits-genes, handed down from your parents. In fact, your genes can influence 50 to 90 percent of your weight. This means that genetic factors played a significant role in why and where you stored weight as you grew.

Your genes are not the only reason for weight issues, however since they can respond to the environment. Yes, your genes can be altered by the environment your provide for them. Where you live, what you eat, who you interact with, how much you sleep, exercise and age…all influence how your genes are expressed. The study of how your environment and lifestyle affect which genes are turned on (or expressed) and which are turned off is called epigenetics.

There are three tools that I use in my practice that can help us determine how to impact your gene expression:

1. Body Composition. If you reduce your body fat and increase lean muscle mass, you are going to change your health. In my clinic I use a tool called the In-Body analysis scale. This shows me how much fat you have, where you are storing it, and how much muscle you have. Knowing these numbers provides insight into what is ideal for their health goals and where we are starting your health goals and where we can start your weight-loss journey. The next step is to form an exercise plan that fits your lifestyle. We continue to measure your body fat percentage over the course of the following weeks to keep us on track with your weight loss and fitness goals.

2. Personalized Nutrition. After spending some time getting to know you and your struggles with weight loss and being healthy, I will review your timeline and matrix with you. The timeline and matrix are standard assessments that I use to get to the root cause of your imbalances. With this information, I am able to recommend a personalized nutrition plan that you can feel comfortable sticking to. Your food plan is not just another "diet." This food plan is a prescription that is targeted and tailored to your specific problems and symptoms.

3. Stress Management. It's no secret that our genes react to stress causing weight gain. Knowing how to reduce your stress is key. With another tool called 'Heart Math', I can determine your coherence. Coherence is when your heart, mind and breath are all aligned. The more aligned your coherence is, the less stressed you are. Over time, using Heart Math to align your coherence, you will lower your daily stress and be able to handle stressful situations with grace and ease.

Your genes will respond to a healthier body composition, personalized nutrition, and stress management by turning off the genes that cause chronic health problems and turning on the genes that protect you from illness.

These three tools represent just a few of the special approaches I take to practicing patient-centered, holistic, functional medicine.

Because there is no 'one size fits all' weight-loss plan, it is important to get to the root cause of your weight loss issues so that we can formulate a plan that is personalized for you.

But I also have something you can do right now to get started on your weight loss and healthy eating journey. You see, I know a lot of you are suffering from fatigue and a lack of energy from carrying the extra weight. That is why I developed the Tiredness Elimination Guide.
